How a Clarish™ Acetate Frame Is Made: The Eight-Stage Process

The production sequence behind every Clarish™ frame — sheet selection, CNC machining, hand finishing, temple fitting, multi-stage polishing, inspection, cleaning and export packing.

A frame that arrives well made looks inevitable. It is not. Between a sheet of acetate and a finished frame sit eight stages, and the difference between factories is almost entirely a question of how much time each one is given.

This is the sequence every Clarish™ frame goes through, and what actually happens at each step.

1. Material selection

The acetate sheet is chosen for colour, pattern and thickness, and checked for defects before any of it is committed to a run.

This is a cheaper place to reject material than any stage after it. A flaw missed here becomes a flaw in a cut front, and a cut front is a sheet plus machine time. Rejecting a sheet costs a sheet.

Thickness matters as much as colour. A design with a heavy browline — our C.1233 or C.319 — needs sheet that can carry the section. A slim round like C.1262 does not, and putting it on thick sheet just makes an unnecessarily heavy frame.

2. Precision CNC machining

Fronts and temples are machined from the sheet on CNC equipment. This is where the geometry gets set:

  • The rim profile, inside and out
  • The lens groove, cut to the shape a glazing lab will work to
  • The hinge seat, and the material around it
  • The bridge, which decides how the frame sits

Every tolerance that matters downstream is held here. On graduated or laminated sheet, where each part is positioned on the sheet also determines where the colour transition lands on the finished frame — get the nesting wrong and the gradient sits in the wrong place across half the batch.

3. Frame shaping and hand finishing

Machined edges are worked back by hand.

A frame straight off the cutter is dimensionally correct and not yet comfortable. This stage gives the rim and bridge the profile that sits properly against a face. It is skilled, manual, and one of the clearest differences between factories — it does not appear on a specification sheet and is immediately obvious in the hand.

4. Temple fitting and assembly

Metal core wires are set into the temples so the arm holds an adjustment rather than drifting back over time. Without a core, a temple distorts and the frame stops fitting — which the wearer experiences as the frame “going loose” and blames on quality.

Hinges are fitted to the type specified for the programme, then fronts and temples are brought together and the frame is aligned as a complete unit. Alignment is checked against the model specification, not by eye alone.

5. Multi-stage polishing

Frames are tumbled with polishing media through successive stages, then finished at the buff.

This is the longest part of the process and the most commonly shortened when a shipment is running late. The evidence is visible:

  • Under-polished acetate reads matte and lifeless, especially on transparent colours
  • Over-polished acetate loses definition at the rim edge, the front face rounding over where it should meet the inner profile at a crisp line
  • Half-vanished markings are the same symptom

If a compressed schedule earlier in a programme has to be absorbed somewhere, this is the only stage with elasticity left in it. Which is precisely why it should be protected.

6. Quality inspection

Inspection through the process, not only at the end. Checking only the finished frame tells you what to reject; checking through the process tells you what to correct.

The five points we check:

  • Incoming sheet — colour, pattern consistency, surface defects, before cutting
  • In-process — dimensional checks at cutting and after assembly
  • Alignment — front symmetry, temple splay and hinge action on the assembled frame
  • Finish — polish quality, edge condition and marking legibility, under consistent light
  • Pre-packing — final visual check immediately before boxing

7. Cleaning and final finishing

Polishing compound has to come off, and it collects in exactly the places a customer looks: the lens groove, the hinge, the inside of the bridge.

Branding is applied at this stage too — logo printing, laser engraving, and the temple markings that carry model reference, size and origin. Placement is decided on the approved sample, not in production, because pad printing and laser engraving behave differently on different colours and finishes. A mark that reads cleanly on solid navy can disappear on a transparent crystal.

8. Packaging and export preparation

Cases, cloths, cartons and any retail-ready presentation, produced to the customer’s artwork. Then export documentation prepared for the destination market.

Packing specification should be agreed long before this point. Reworking packaging at destination is the most avoidable cost in a programme.

Where programmes actually slip

Not usually in production. Almost always in the approvals before it:

  1. Design review treated as admin. A manufacturer who returns a quote without raising a single question has probably not looked closely.
  2. Colour chosen from a screen. Screens do not reproduce a laminated sheet’s depth. Choose from physical sheet.
  3. Sampling compressed to hit a launch date. Budget two sample rounds, not one. Each is production plus shipping plus your review time.
  4. Verbal approval. Confirm in writing that the approved sample is retained as the reference for the batch.

That last one matters most. An approved sample on the bench is a specification. In a drawer, it is a recollection — and recollections are what disputes are made of.

A realistic way to read lead time

Ask any manufacturer to break a quoted lead time into these stages rather than give you one number:

A single number hides where the risk sits. A supplier who cannot break it down probably has not planned it.
